GRANNY ALWAYS SAID . . .
How many times in your adult life have you surprised yourself by quoting your Mother to your children?  I have not been blessed with children of my own, but my career has been with delinquent teenagers.  No one was more surprised than I when the realization struck on how many times I was quoting my parents.  I had to laugh when I realized how important it was to me now to have these young people understand and then remember how I felt when I heard the same things as a teenager.

As I grow older and hopefully more mature, I cherish the memories of a Mother who cared enough to share her wisdom with me.   I sincerely hope you enjoy reading her gentle teachings.

"IF YOU SEE SOMEONE WITHOUT A SMILE - GIVE THEM ONE OF YOURS" - - -  Ever pause to smile and say hello to that elderly person slowly pushing their cart through the market?  You may be the only one to even notice they are there.  you could be the bright spot in their day!  The smile that lights up their face will give you a boost too!

"THERE IS SOME GOOD IN EVERYBODY" . . .
How many times have we all looked at someone and made the snap judgement statement - "Just look at that worthless bum!"  Granny would tell you to stop and look closely.  There is some good in everybody.  That bum is some mothers son or someones brother or father.  He is loved by someone.  Look closely for that "good spot".

"LOVE IS NOT CONDITIONAL" . . .  Loving and caring for family and friends is knowing everything about someone and loving them anyway.  No one is perfect.  Each little difference makes us special.  We learn from lifes experiences.  Isn't it great to have folks who love us enough to let us experience life without fear of being isolated and unloved in return?  Take time from your busy schedule to give these special folks in your life a big hug and a heartfelt "thank you".

"DO AND BE THE BEST YOU CAN EVERYDAY AND TOMORROW WILL TAKE CARE OF ITSELF" - -  Granny always encouraged us to do the best we could in all things, to live today to the fullest and hope for tomorrow to be better.   She encouraged looking for something good even in disappointment.  Often the things which were the biggest disappointments turned out to be blessings in disguise.

"THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK - HARSH WORDS CAN BRUISE AND LAST FOREVER"  -  Granny never gossiped or said anything harsh about anyone.  She encouraged others to practice the same thoughtfulness.  She always felt harsh words could cause feelings to be hurt unnecessarily.  Unkind words can sometimes cause bad memories which will last a lifetime or break a friendship which could have been a real blessing in our life.  Why take a chance on missing out on some beautiful memories for a second or two of spite?  Pause a second before you speak, replace harsh words with kindness and be a blessing to someone else.

"DON'T JUDGE ACTIONS OF OTHERS UNTIL YOU WALK IN THEIR SHOES"  - - Granny always warned not to judge by saying = "If that were me I would........".  Just as any child, I listened with one ear.  Several times I said - "If that happened to me I would........".  Guess what  -  it happened to me and I reacted totally differently.  My emotions, values, and circumstances had me doing everything except what I had said I would do.  Seems fate had me learn the hard way just what Granny meant.  Don't be critical  -  be supportive.  We may not agree with what others do, but unless we walk in their shoes we can not know what we might do in the same situation.

"AN OPEN DOOR, A SMILING FACE, AND A HELPING HAND WILL GIVE YOU A HAPPY HEART AND A HAPPY HOME" - - Our door was always open to anyone  -  especially around holidays.  It was not unusual to have friends join us for holiday meals, especially if they were far from home and couldn't be with their own loved ones.  Another thing Granny always did was to fix a heaping plate to take to a neighbor who was unable to care for herself.  She felt being blessed with good food and the good health to prepare it was something which should be shared.  Give it a try.  Seems everything just tastes better when it is shared with others!

"THE TREASURE OF THIS LIFE IS THE GIVING OF LOVE TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS"  - -  How wise this statement proves to be.  Granny lived her life full of the pleasure of loving and being loved by those she touched.  Her memory continues to bring pleasure as we remember those special things she did out of love to make our life one of happiness and pleasure.  Her stories of remembered pleasures passed generation to generation give us a picture of warm loving people who lived years ago.  Nothing material can match having your descendents know you as a caring, wonderful ancestor!
