MOUNTAIN RECEPIES

Index

Good food in abundance and an open invitation for friends to join the meal was and is a basic part of mountain hospitality.   The old time mountain cooks laid their table with two or three meats, two or more home baked breads, numerous vegetables, home baked pies and cakes, and a variety of homemade jams and jellies to enjoy with hot biscuits.  Just about everything served was grown and prepared on the home farm.

On special days when there was a crowd, the men ate at the "first table".  The children often ate at a smaller side table.  The ladies kept the bowls filled with hot food and enjoyed their meal after the men had eaten and retired to the front room or porch to relax.   A special treat for the grandchildren at Mamaw Lucys was to have our meal on the stairs leading to the bedrooms.   The older you were, the higher you sat on the stairs.

The wonderful memories of these family gatherings bring warm feelings to all who enjoyed these special times.  Tradition in our family demands certain dishes for the special meal or holiday to be complete.   I hope you enjoy them as much as we do.
